For users new to z/OS, batch utilities are often something of a mystery. Esoteric naming conventions (such as PGM=IEFBR14 for a simple no-op) can be confusing and frustrating, as can the many unique types of z/OS datasets (such as the numerous different variations of sequential, partitioned, and VSAM files). It's not always obvious which programs should be used to move, copy, or manipulate datasets or perform other functions such as generating test data or mapping libraries. This month, we'll discuss the most useful DFSMS and z/OS dataset utilities, from IEBGENER, IEBDG, and IEBCOPY, to IDCAMS, AMBLIST, and others. We'll look at which are the most appropriate for various uses, take a look at a some examples, and identify which ones are obsolete and should be avoided.
