Measuring Up -
An Introduction to SMF
Mainframe systems are some of the largest, most complex, and most critical in the world. Most large corporations depend heavily on z/OS for its capability, reliability, availability, and security. One reason these systems are so robust are the System Management Facilities - SMF - records and utilities that document virtually everything that happens in z/OS in great detail. Every system resource, from processor time to disk and tape, to storage, to performance is intimately tracked by well over 100 types of standard records (along with other user-defined records) that can shine a light on every corner of system activity. This month, we'll examine the SMF system - how records are created, the purpose and uses of the most common ones, the system facilities that manage, route, and control SMF data, and the technologies available for using this data on other platforms.
