Introduction to VSAM

Mainframe systems make extensive use of VSAM files, a type of dataset organization unique to z/OS®. VSAM datasets can have complex keyed structures and multiple components which are linked together in a 'cluster' or 'sphere'. Every aspect of VSAM, from dataset creation to keyed, sequential, or direct reading and writing, to exclusive or shared access, differs significantly from most types of processing for non-VSAM datasets as well from processing in non-mainframe systems.

In our April 2023 webinar, we discussed the many different types of VSAM clusters (KSDS, ESDS, LDS, and more), their structure, use and relationships, and the macros and control blocks required for processing.
