Introduction to VSAM

Mainframe systems make extensive use of VSAM files, a type of dataset organization unique to z/OS^®. VSAM datasets can have complex keyed structures and multiple components which are linked together in a 'cluster' or 'sphere'. Every aspect of VSAM, from dataset creation to keyed, sequential, or direct reading and writing, to exclusive or shared access, differs significantly from most types of processing for non-VSAM datasets as well from processing in non-mainframe systems.
